Educator

Joyah has a huge passion for teaching creative educational workshops. Melding the European styles of improv with their own theatrical sensibility, Joyah has become a very unique teacher for actors, dancers and comedians of all ages.

A founding member of their high school sketch team and College improv team, Joyah began to develop a strong comedic voice at an early age. Joyah has since travelled far and wide to hone those skills under the tutelage of comedic masterminds like  Anthony Atamanuik, Jill Bernard, Jason Geary and Anders Fors. Joyah went on to become a company member and coach at Reckless Theatre (NYC) before founding the internationally celebrated musical improv team, Charlie.

Joyah has a similarly extensive background in drama and is happiest when teaching the entire spectrum of the human condition. In the classroom Joyah focuses on physicality to help free the mind of an actor with workshops on Laban, Alexander technique and Fitzmaurice work.

Joyah currently serves as a resident program director for Random Farms Kids Theater.

Joyah is not only a super knowledgeable instructor with a breadth of different experience to pull from, but has a unique energy and enthusiasm that draws out something new from all of her students. Exercises I’d been doing for years were suddenly not stale in her hands. Even further, Joyah developed a whole new improv form with our troupe, consistently ready to grapple with the fun and more challenging parts. Any organization or theater would be lucky to have her.

I had the pleasure of working with Joyah Spangler at NTSA on The Dolls of New Albion and left the experience impressed by her thoughtful ideas and commitment to collaboration. Joyah takes the time to make sure every idea is heard and always addresses the concerns of the student. She led a musical improv workshop that I found particular impressive, facilitating a space that made sure every artistic voice was heard.

I had the pleasure of having Joyah as a private coach for two improv teams (one through a theater and one independent). In a more formal theater setting Joyah was a ray of sunshine! She came to every rehearsal full of energy and enthusiasm, which tended to rub off on the rest of us. This team had never performed together before but we quickly grew a deep bond due to Joyah creating such a strong environment of inclusion and openness. Joyah happens to be one hell of a performer/improvisor. Her demonstrations and notes solidified our team’s style and I personally saw major growth in my scene-work. I couldn’t speak more highly of Joyah, she would be an incredible asset to any team.

Joyah is true to her name. She always made learning a time for joyous creation rather than pressure. I loved my time with her, she pushed me to be my best without me even noticing— that’s how great she is. She knows how to connect with someone, push them to their highest potential, and lose themselves while they do it because they’re having so much fun. That’s what I remember most about my time with Joyah

Joyah was an incredible mentor and teacher during my time at the National Theatre for Student Artists. I served as her assistant choreographer, and will always be grateful for her patience, encouragement, and enthusiasm throughout the entire experience. From our daily rehearsals to nightly master classes, Joyah’s energy was steady and contagious, and made learning new techniques like musical improv, laban movement analysis, and dance combinations so enjoyable. She helped me grow as an actor and dancer, and worked hard to ensure that my creative vision was present in our show’s choreography.

I had the joy of taking improv classes with Joyah at the former Reckless Theater in NYC and hiring her as a private coach for two different improv teams I was on. She’s a fabulous person, educator, and performer, who takes an energetic and creative approach to teaching. I always felt super supported under her sharp and empathetic eye, especially when she’d encourage us to step outside of ourselves and try something new. I appreciated her hyper-specific feedback, her joie de vivre, and her reliability.
